Carol and I (Paul Jones) – VV Members – enjoyed another fabulous “Ride with a Winemaker” weekend in the southern Okanagan. It was our 3rd time in the event, sponsored by Black Hills Winery. Friday evening started out with a welcoming dinner prepared by former Olympic athlete Kristi Richards and her team from Solfeggio Restaurant in Pemberton. It was a casual affair and a chance to meet new participants as well as renew acquaintances with people whom we’ve met during the previous rides.
Unfortunately Saturday morning dawned wet and windy but 38 hardy riders and guides set out from Black Hills Winery after fuelling up with some wonderful smoothies, coffee and snacks. We had three options – 70, 90, or 100 kms (all ‘ish’) for the day with a few rest/refuel stops along the way. The rain didn’t last and we chose the middle distance. Other than a killer hill climb, the route is fantastic – through the rolling hills west of Oliver up to Penticton and back to the Liquidity Winery in Okanagan Falls for lunch.
The Saturday dinner (see photos below of menu) alone is worth the price of admission. A fabulous 7-course wine-paired dinner prepared by Joy Road Catering with the support of a half-dozen Okanagan wineries.
Judging by the level of enthusiasm on Sunday morning, a lot of people really enjoyed themselves the night before. Only a handful of riders opted for the 100-km option with everyone else more than happy with a relaxed, shorter route through Oliver and back followed by lunch at the Watermark Resort in Osoyoos.
If you enjoy wine and riding (and really, who doesn’t!), we highly recommend this weekend. A lot of people add on a day or two at either end to make some stops at the many Okanagan wineries. We plan to do it again next year and it would be nice to have some fellow VVV’s join us.
